We celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month each October, and this important day acts as a reminder to practice good habits that promote the best oral health possible. National Dental Hygiene Month is led by the American Dental Hygienists Association (ADHA). It is targeted mainly towards the oral health of children; however, this annual reminder to practice good dental hygiene is critical for adults to think about as well. Each year, dental hygienists, public and private organizations, and schools work together and sponsor speaking events, webinars, educational activities, and more to promote the importance of dental hygiene.

This year, Advanced Indiana will be doing its part to celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month by discussing the elements of good oral health and the importance of dental hygiene. While this event offers the perfect opportunity to remind us of the good that dental hygiene can do in our lives, we need to put it into practice every day. Here’s what you should know as you celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month this year.

What is Good Oral Health?

As we celebrate National Dental Hygiene Month this year, we feel it necessary to discuss the focus of this event: the essential habits you should practice daily for good oral health. Here’s what you should keep in mind on this day (and every day) to promote the best oral health possible:

  1. Flossing: Flossing should be done at least once daily. Preferably, you should always floss right before you go to bed, as trapped food particles can do the most damage to your teeth when you sleep.
  2. Brushing: The American Dental Hygienists Association recommends brushing your teeth at least twice per day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. You should always brush once in the morning after breakfast and once in the evening after dinner at a minimum. It is also highly recommended to brush with toothpaste containing fluoride for optimal oral health.
  3. Antimicrobial Mouthwash: Make the using an antimicrobial mouthwash a part of your daily dental hygiene routine alongside brushing and flossing!
  4. Eat Healthily: Finally, good oral health has a lot to do with what we eat. A healthy diet that follows the food pyramid promotes good oral health. It makes it a priority to cut down on the consumption of sugars and sweets that can be detrimental to our oral health (and overall health). To get the most out of your oral health, make sure to practice healthy eating!

How to Celebrate Dental Hygiene Month the Right Way

The best way to do your part in celebrating Dental Hygiene Month is to make dental hygiene a priority for you and your family. Achieving healthy teeth takes a lifetime of consistent care. Here are just a few of the many ways to practice good dental hygiene this month, and every month, to keep yourself on the path to optimal oral health.

  • Brush Properly
The way that you brush is just as important as how frequently you brush. Brushing your teeth improperly is almost as unhealthy as neglecting to brush at all! When you brush your teeth, be sure to take your time and move your toothbrush in gentle and circular motions to remove plaque effectively. The more plaque that remains on your teeth, the worst your overall oral health will be.
  • Don’t Forget to Take Care of Your Tongue
Did you know that our tongues say a lot about our health? Believe it or not, plaque can also build up on your tongue, and this can lead to a slew of health issues (not to mention bad breath). As you make an effort to prioritize good dental hygiene this month, don’t neglect your tongue. Gently brush your tongue every time you brush your teeth to keep it clean and healthy.
  • See Your Dentist Regularly
No matter how much effort you put into practicing good dental hygiene, you’ll always need a helping hand. Even the most dutiful flossers and brushers need to see their dentists regularly. We recommend visiting your local dentist for cleanings and checkups at least twice per year.

A skilled and knowledgeable dentist will not only help you keep your teeth healthy, but they will also be able to spot problems and provide a solution. If you haven’t made it a priority to keep regular appointments with your dentist, use this year’s Dental Hygiene Month to form a resolution that can benefit your overall health. Why National Dental Hygiene Month is Important

As you participate in observing National Dental Hygiene Month this year, remind yourself why it’s crucial in the first place! Here are just a few reasons that we at Advanced Indiana are so happy we get to celebrate this event each year.

  1. It Encourages Oral Health
Oral health plays a vital role in our overall health, allowing us to live healthier and happier lives. Keeping your oral health on track is one of the best ways to keep bacteria at bay, eliminating the risk of severe health problems in the future. Without proper dental hygiene, you put yourself at risk for dental issues such as gum disease and tooth decay, as well as hypertension, diabetes, and other serious health issues.
  2. It’s a Great Way to Celebrate Dental Hygienists
There are over 200,000 dental hygienists in the United States alone, and National Dental Hygiene Month is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the work they do. Dental hygienists have a passion for helping us keep our mouths happy and healthy, and this month is a reminder to thank your local dental hygienist!
